Role Dynamics of a Travel Sterile Processing Technician with Ambition24hours

  • Core Responsibilities: As a sterile processing tech (SPT), you serve as the primary barrier against surgical contamination and protect the well-being of every patient and OR team member. Primarily, a SPT prepares and sterilizes medical equipment and instruments, collects and cleans contaminated medical supplies, and removes medical waste appropriately.

  • Work Across Departments: Partner with surgeons, ER nurses, and other medical professionals to ensure operating environments are sterile and ready for use and to communicate about any issues with tools or equipment.

  • Quality Control and Zero Tolerance for Risk: Execute every decontamination, assembly, and sterilization cycle with meticulous attention to detail. Demonstrate expertise by adhering strictly to all Instructions for Use (IFUs), AAMI, and facility infection prevention guidelines and equipment manufacturers' specifications.

Specialized Sterile Processing Technician Careers

The advancement path for SPTs is more limited compared to other allied traveler careers. That said, here are possible career advancements for a hospital sterile processing technician:

  • Sterile processing supervisor jobs are usually the next step up from SPT roles. They include all the responsibilities of a SPT, but they are also responsible for leading a team of techs, creating and implementing robust sterilization processes, and ensuring compliance with all the necessary infection control guidelines.

  • Surgical tech roles also carry many comparable duties to SPTs, like maintaining a sterile OR and/or ER. The major differences are that surgical techs assist surgeons and nurses with scrubbing in, passing instruments, prepping patients, and holding equipment/body parts during surgery. For SPTs to qualify for surgical tech roles, they'll need to enroll in a surgical technology program, do clinical rotations, obtain a NBSTSA certification and state licensing.

  • SPTs collaborate daily with nurses and doctors, so they know the importance of teamwork and patient safety. To transition into a RN career, SPTs need to complete an associate degree or a bachelor's degree in nursing, pass the NCLEX-RN exam, and get a state license from their state's Board of Nursing.

  • Sterile processing jobs have a lot of similarities to various allied health professionals (AHPs), including rad techs, cath lab techs, and respiratory therapists. They are all responsible for putting patient safety first and supporting surgery and nursing staff. To pursue one of these AHP careers, SPTs will need to complete the relevant certification and/or formal schooling program.
